Tips and Tricks to Care for Your Cutlery

When your cutlery is properly taken care of and maintained, you can enjoy your cutlery for many years and avoid it from losing its beauty or becoming dull. After all, fine China sets aren't the only ones that deserve some extra TLC!

Just like your clothing and accessories, your cutlery must be properly cleaned to ensure that it is free from harmful elements that can damage or dull its surface and make it lose its shine. There are a few different ways to go about caring for your cutlery. If you want to know how to properly clean it, how to dry it, and how to store it, read on!

How to Keep Your Cutlery Sparkling Clean

Tip #1: Give Them a Gentle Cleanse

If your cutlery pieces are made of stainless steel, your first step to keeping them sparkling clean is to give them a gentle cleanse. If your cutlery is made of stainless steel, this is extremely easy. Just give them a quick washing with a non-abrasive dishcloth and water.

If your cutlery is made of silverware that is plated or is a mix of silverware and stainless steel, it will require a bit more TLC. Silverware pieces should be brought up to a simmering temperature to melt away the oils and food particles stuck on the surface.

Other than that, it's important to hand wash gold and onyx cutlery sets, as only stainless steel cutlery can withstand the harshness of dishwashers.

Tip #2: Hand Dry Your Cutlery

It's important to remember that although you have washed your cutlery, you have to also hand dry them. Even though your cutlery may not appear to be that wet, the water on its surface can leave spots and streaks on the cutlery. To avoid that, be sure to dry your cutlery using a dry, non-abrasive washcloth.

Tip #3: Store Them Properly and in an Organised Fashion

Storing your cutlery in an organised manner will ensure that it is dry and clean for when you're ready to use it. When storing your cutlery, make sure to use a cutlery tray, a flatware organiser, or simply a cutlery storage drawer. This will ensure that your cutlery stays dry and prevent it from getting scratched or dented.

Tip #4: Polish Them Every Now and Then for Some Much-Needed Touch-Ups

To help keep your cutlery looking its best, don't be afraid to polish it every now and then. This can include the use of a quality stainless steel polish, which can do wonders in adding shine back to your lacklustre utensils. To that end, it's best to polish your cutlery between three to six times a year.

The Bottom Line: Why It's Worth Caring for Your Cutlery

Caring for your cutlery is an important part of keeping them looking their best, and eating with cutlery on a daily basis. If you want to see your cutlery's beauty last well over a decade, be sure to take good care of it!
